Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra
Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra is a professional ensemble founded in 1925, as the Dubrovnik Philharmonic, later named the Dubrovnik City Orchestra and then the Festival Symphony Orchestra. In 1992, it changed its name into today’s. Its members are musicians with academic education, mostly from the Zagreb Academy of Music. Many of them are great soloists, which significantly enriched musical offer of this artistic body.
Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra is an important part of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Dubrovnik and Croatia, and behind it there is a long list of concerts, including tours all over Europe and in the US. The Orchestra performs a repertoire consisting of pieces by baroque, classical and romantic composers in concert venues such as the Rector’s palace, churches and the city squares. Lovro von Matačić, Antonio Janigro, Zubin Mehta, Kiril Kondrashin, Ernst Marzendorfer, Milan Horvat, Pavle Dešpalj, Anton Nanut, David Ojstrah, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Svjatoslav Richter, Henryk Szeryng, Uto Ughi, Christoph Eschenbach, Stefan Milenkovich, Ivo Pogorelić, Dubravka Tomšič, Dunja Vejzović, Ruža Pospiš Baldani, Monika Leskovar, Vladimir Krpan, Mischa Maisky, Yuri Bashmet, Julian Rachlin, Michel Legrand, Pavica Gvozdić, Mario Hossen, Ivo Dražinić, Gidon Kremer, Michel Legrand, Pavica Gvozdić, Mario Hossen, Christoph Campestrini, Đelo Jusić, Nicholas Milton, Noam Zur, Viktor Tretiyakov, Patrick Gallois, Maxim Fedotov are some of the most prestigious local and foreign conductors and soloists with whom the Orchestra appeared.
In last few years the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra performed in the most prestigious venues all over the world (Kennedy Center- Washington, Kurhaus – Bad Schwalbach, Herkules Saal – Munich, Basf – Ludwigshafen, Lisinski – Zagreb etc).
In 2005, Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra was awarded with the «Milka Trnina» prize, which is the most prestigious musical branch award in Croatia and in 2015, it was awarded for contributing to the reputation and promotion of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County.
